IL-17A in Neurodegeneration

In neurodegenerative diseases, IL-17A is thought to contribute to disease progression by promoting inflammation and neurotoxicity. For example, IL-17A levels are elevated in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In addition, studies have shown that blocking IL-17A signaling can protect against neurodegeneration in animal models of these diseases.

Researchers are currently investigating the role of IL-17A in neurodegeneration and developing new ways to block IL-17A signaling as a potential treatment for these diseases. For example, some clinical trials are currently underway to evaluate the safety and efficacy of IL-17A inhibitors in patients with multiple sclerosis and ALS.
