About Dr. Garret M. Hampton, Ph.D.

Dr. Garret Hampton has over 30 years of experience working across Academia and Industry in life sciences, technology, and business to translate novel solutions for oncology diagnostics and therapy into clinical practice. Over his career, he has significantly contributed to understanding the genetic changes that lead to, and fuel, the progression of cancers; the discovery and development of targeted cancer therapies and the molecular diagnostics used to match patients with the therapies most likely to lead to better patient outcomes.

Most recently, Garret served as President of the Clinical Sequencing and Oncology Division at Thermo Fisher Scientific, driving the adoption of disruptive, “next-day” rapid NGS-based Oncology testing to enable therapy selection. Before that, Garret was Senior Vice President, Clinical Genomics at Illumina Inc., leading the development of Oncology, Reproductive Health and Rare Genetic Disease products and driving the development of in vitro diagnostics (IVD) in Oncology and Prenatal Testing.

Prior to his roles in molecular diagnostics, Garret held multiple executive leadership roles in Genentech and Roche, Celgene, and Novartis. In these roles, he led clinical biomarker research and development, enabling the success of multiple drug programs. At Genentech and Roche, he built and led the Company’s global translational sciences capabilities.

Before transitioning to industry, Garret was Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California at San Diego, with a joint appointment at the Ludwig Institute of Cancer Research. His research on the genetic changes in cancer development at UC San Diego, and subsequent roles in industry, led to the publication of over 150 peer-reviewed articles with 14,000 lifetime citations.

Garret currently serves as an Independent Director at Ideaya Biosciences Inc., (NASDAQ: IDYA), a clinical stage oncology company and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at UC San Diego’s School of Biological Sciences. Garret also serves as an advisor to several biotech companies focused on oncology, multiomics and artificial intelligence. Garret received his M.A. and B.A. at Trinity College and his Ph.D. at University College London and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, London.
